I'm pretty sure he came up with it on his own. The idea has cropped up in quite a number of places independently, including Nikon and Kodak (who made such a thing back in the mists of time, the DCS100 which was an F3-based digital) and of course Leica, who has sort-of built 2 (the DMR and the M8) -- M.
