I've just read Mike Johnston's blog and his call for a Digimat kind of burns
me. Back in the dim days when he was a regular poster on this list, I and
probably a few others suggested just such a camera, (I don't remember who,
but I wasn't alone). Simple no frills digital, maybe even manual focus,
based on something like the MZ/ZX-M. Now he posts it on his blog as if it
was his original idea. It's not like anyone pays me for my photographic
opinions, but it burns me a bit when someone claims an idea for their own
that obviously isn't.

I'm pretty sure he came up with it on his own. The idea has cropped up
in quite a number of places independently, including Nikon and Kodak
(who made such a thing back in the mists of time, the DCS100 which was
an F3-based digital) and of course Leica, who has sort-of built 2 (the
DMR and the M8)
The concept yes, but the particulars no. Those you cite are hybrids, and were limited of necessity. Maybe he may think he came up with it on his own. bit claiming it as his own particular heresy is just annoying.

The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or
drinking; he can ruin himself with gambling. If he does he is certainly a damn
fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a
free man any more than a dog.
