It's apparently going to be the price of a small car. So
let's say it
will cost the same as a Fiat 500, which was the best small
car of last
year, according to some poll or other.

Taking the midpoint of the price range, let's say you're
going to pay
£11,000 for the small object of your desire. Instead of buying the
car, which you can afford but don't want anyway - buy the camera!
Now think of the savings. If you drive on average 12,000 miles per
year, that's 36,000 miles over the lifetime of the loan. At
50mpg you
will need 720 gallons of petrol, which is going to cost you about
£3,500. That's without taking into account depreciation vs
appreciation, additional running costs, tax, insurance and
the price of bumber stickers.
So buying a Leica M9 will save you at least £3,500 over 3 years.
That's enough to have Chas Roberts build you a custom,
made-to-measure, handbuilt Audax bicycle and still have
some money left to buy Rapha cycle clothing.

Er, no. This is a Leica, so each and every file from its
Germanic bowels is going to be a superlative jewel, worthy of
printing at 18x24" - or whatever is the largest feasible size
for the format involved. This is going to require a whole
load of investment in computing and display power (£1000)
storeage (£200 for high capacity drive and another £200 for
one year of backups, including offsite location) printing
ability (£1500 for printer and say £3000 for a year's supply
of ink and paper) making the Fiat a much more sensible
option. The only way the Leica is going to be cheaper is if
you buy it and put it in a display cabinet...........
No, no. No M9 owner could incur such costs. As you point out 90% of them
will remain in a display cabinet. The other 10% belong to Magnum
photographers who are already suitably equipped and receive everything free
from Leica to use in adverts which feed the fantasies of the
cabinet-displayers. The final 1% is me, when I win the lottery and can
afford a Lamborgini Gallardo with a bike rack, as well as everything else.
Any manufacturer that can sell 101% of its product is alright by me.
