I've used my 6x7 with and without the wooden grip. I like the wooden
grip for verticals, but I prefer it without the grip for horizontal
shooting. I support the camera with my left hand underneath while my
right focuses. It's very steady that way. My left wrist hurts when I try
to support it with the grip. So even with the grip installed I use the
left hand underneath. The manual that came with my 105/2.4 lens
recommends holding the camera in this manner. Try it. I think it's much
steadier and much more comfortable.
By the way I really like the format. It translates very well to 11
x14 and almost perfectly to 8x10. I haven't had any film printed in a
lab. I do my own BW, and I print my color digitally, usually from
transparencies.
