I think you might find that there is a strip of felt that is inset into a groove on the hood where it mates to the lens when reversed. I agree - the reversing hoods on these lenses is quite convenient and the design is well done. In some cases the hood is a little short to allow for this but not so much that significant sacrifice is suffered. This reversing storage is one reason I spent so much time hunting the correct hoods for these lenses. The other benefit is that when stored like this in the proper case, there is no rattling and the lens is well protected.
