I'm not a left coaster, but I visit frequently. I've had some great photo hikes in the Canyons of north Malibu. Just drive up the Pacific Coast Highway (you can catch it where Interstate 10 terminates in Santa Monica). Sycamore Canyon is very nice. It's right near the LA/Ventura County line on the PCH. Just north of there is La Jolla Canyon, which is very pretty. Lots of rock formations, some little waterfalls, and if you hike in a couple of miles from the coast, you'll find a small lake. See http://pug.komkon.org/01jan/LaJolla2.html As you drive through Malibu, you'll cross a bridge over a creek that runs out into the ocean. Just to the east of that bridge, there's a bird sanctuary populated by the somewhat rare Brown Pelicans. (Steve Larson tipped me off to that one, and he might remember the name of it.) Paul Stenquist
