It also could be memory. If you are running XP Pro, get as close to 3 gig as you can, depending on slots mostly. If you are running Vista or Win7 32bit, get as close to 8 gig as you can. If you are thinking of upgrading, check your programs for compatibility with win 64 bit of whatever flavor. Win7 64 is a much better program that the 32 bit version. But as usual, not all is compatible and your mileage can vary.

You can always buy a cheap PCI card to add some USB 2.0 ports to your computer. If your external hard drives are USB 2.0 hi-speed compatible, you may see an increase in the transfer speeds between yout computer and the external HDs.
