I think it depends on the species of artifice.

I saw the model's appearance not as "fake" but as "very expertly made
up".  You can argue for that being fake -- possibly on the grounds of
disbelief that Bill knows how to apply makeup that well -- but I'd
rather argue for it on grounds of a specific modern aesthetic.
