You only need do this once (in theory). Aaron's mention of the new 6x7 75mm lens was that building it like this can give a reduced filter size. That's a compromise I'm sure a lot of people are willing to make. BTW I catalog all my photographic equipment in two spreadsheets. One is a record of serial numbers, and the other is a record of what I paid for each particular item, and what I subsequently sold it for (if applicable). The net dollar value is starting to approach half my yearly salary (ouch!). And most of it is worth a lot more as I've had some really good bargains (most was bought secondhand)...
