A very good point and I've been hoping someone would bring it up.

Of all the things males do with their spare money and time, isn't
photography among the most benign?

It isn't illegal. It isn't immoral. It isn't addictive (well, technically).
It doesn't impair us. We won't get diseases from practicing it (except
Brandan's Pentaxitis). Furthermore, despite the cost, it's certainly not the
most expensive thing we could be engaging in: the cost of one deep sea
fishing boat or antique car or tiger-hunting expedition would pretty much
dwarf what most of us spend on photography.

Probably the worst effect, spousal-approval wise, is that it seems to
encourage a lot of us to spend (waste?) inordinate amounts of time on the
Internet. <g>
