we actually denature our alcohol with phenolphthalein. Aside from being a nifty 
acid\base indicator it is a potent laxative.

He did must have been into doing it the hard way.  Any chemistry lab 
worth it's salt will have "100%" Alcohol among it's reagents.  It's much 
easier to steal it...
