My first SLR was a Zenit E, which one of my uncles gave me for my 18th birthday. When I decided I wanted a better quality camera I surveyed everything I could reasonably afford and the MX gave the best bang for the buck without forcing automation on me. At the time my best photo buddy had an Olympus OM-1, but I couldn't justify the extra cost of one of them over the MX. I can't remember which Nikons and Canons I compared, but they were much more expensive and gave you nothing extra, other than brand value for whatever that's worth.
