that question in itself requires an extremely well polished crystall
ball all made of molten unicorn dust... how about why would it not
make sense to even try... even if all that comes of it is that some
future generation will last a few years longer, why even consider the
option to deny them that extra time?

Since we don't know if we can stop it, how would we know if what we do
prolongs the existence of that generation or shortens it? I know that
rich societies have more resources to expend on survival, than poor
ones. Anything that makes us poorer as a society is suspect from the
start.
