In short, some journalism students entered a faked story into a contest run
by Paris Match, and won. Then they revealed that their entry was a protest.

I recall reading a lot of discussion about it a few months ago.
perhaps not on PDML, but somewhere.

It really just goes to show how difficult real photojournalism is.
These students who faked their entry were able to set up scenes, pose
the subjects, choose time of day, weather, etc. for all their photos.
Honest entrants had to deal with the messy, uncooperative nature of
the real world. With such advantages, it isn't surprising that the
students who were willing to cheat won the contest.

Along similar lines, a number of years ago a friend of mine and I were discussing that "International Poetry Contest" that is pretty much something to be avoided... and is still around , I think. ... this was pre internet... . As a lark, he entered a poem "he" wrote... and ended up with one of the very few prizes - $50.00 . I think it was in standard sonnet form or close to it - each line was a line of poetry from a different famous poem.
