Well, the fact that they were staged and good is the point: They
couldn't create photos that good if they didn't stage them. As for
previous winners being "uninspiring", you have to take into account
that the judges can only pick winners from among those who've entered
-  and sometimes the entries just aren't that good. Many times Doug
and I have been judging the GFM photo contest and found nothing
particularly worthy in one category. But we still have to pick a
winner!

I think the "protest" claim is BS: If they'd really wanted to protest
they'd have entered honestly and out-done the other entrants. By
resorting to cheating they demonstrated the opposite of what they
claimed. They demonstrated that the other entrants were too good to
beat *without* cheating!
