Bruce, As far as I know there are three baskc series: Super Takumar, Super Mulit-Coated Takumar, and Pentax SMC. They are marked accordingly on the filter ring. However, within the latest series there are early and late versions of some lenses, the 55/4 for example. In the case of this lens, the typography is on the outside of the filter ring in the late version. There are also ED versions of some of the longer focal lengths. Paul
