Thanks to all who have weighed in with good information.....In my case,
I was suffering from a little aged brain crampitus.....The lens is a
Super Tak and has its own switch for iris control, allowing for wide
open focusing when on. It was on and the DS couldn't tell so the
metering was always done at f 1.9. The second issue is that even at ISO
200, F 1.9 is way too much in the open sun....There is the crux of
it.....mea culpa....But it was good brain exercise.
Head slightly crooked but still with a smile.

there is another method, take a photo, observe captured

repeat as needed until good overall image is captured

Subject: Re: Manual Lens on DS
Be sure that the custom function 'Use Aperture Ring' is set to 'Permitted'
and set the camera to M mode. Then you have two options as to metering.
1. Use the DoF preview, this will give you a numerical readout for how far
off the currently selected exposure is, it reads out up to +/- 3 stops IIRC.
Note the readout only is accurate when DoF preview is engaged.
2. Press the AE-Lock button and the camera will stop down the lens, meter
and then set the appropriate shutter speed.
If you only care about shooting wide open or are using screwmount or preset
aperture lenses you can also use Av mode, but it will meter for wide open
only.
Most people use option 2 in this case.

I wanted to try my Manual 85 MM on the DS. I cannot figure out how to
set up the camera to get the exposure. Is there any way to use the
internal meter to read the correct exposure or do I only have the
completely manual mode using an external meter to deterine the correct
exposure?
