some constructive aspect of MF sensors maybe? I can imagine the larger
sensor surface might add other issues or require e.g. larger structure
sizes etc. Also, perhaps design and production optimized for higher
per wafer yield...

...and always a few steps back in sensor technologies. Don't forget that tech improvements show up in smaller sensors for compact cameras, then spread to 4/3 and APS, then to FF, and then, much later, to MF.
