I was once at a petrol station (why would you call it "gas" if it's
liquid!?!?!?)

Gas is short-hand for gasoline.

First there was kerosene, which you call paraffin for some odd reason, then came gasoline. But saying the whole word takes too long, and Americans are in a hurry to get things done.

I think the only reason kerosene didn't get shortened to "kero" was people were afraid they'd get confused & put it on pancakes by mistake.

What do you lot call pancakes?
