Questioning the need for this at all ?
Do you have internal HDs laying around that you're using as external HDs?
Seems better to outright buy an external HD from the start - no need for
this device.
What am I missing?
Seems to be for hot swapping multiple hard drives.
I just ran into a use for them yesterday. Went back to my old school to
apply for readmission; planning to reenter for summer semester.
School now has a requirement that every student have a 100GB or larger
hard-drive. Must be formatted FAT so it will work on both PC and Mac.
All the workstations have these docks. You keep your work on the drive
until you upload it to the instructor.
Finishing and correction is heavily digital workflow.
Other interesting changes -
When I started in 2005 every student was required to have a medium
format camera. With this academic year, every student has to have a
DSLR, and the students are assigned a medium format camera from the
school's inventory.
