Thanks, Jostein! Statistically, you are probably right. The most
common variant here is Scolopax rusticola (gracias google) aka
woodcock aka Waldschnepfe aka in hunters' lingo and hence into common
use Schnepfe. From comparing images my idea was G.g. but I've changed
my mind on grounds of likelihood. However, we will never know since it
was taken away last night, presumably by a cat. :[
