Ah, that's no use on NZ's most popular auction site (Trade Me). They have an auto-extend feature so the auction will extend by 5 minutes if a bid is placed within that final 5 minutes. If another bid is placed it'll extend again. After the nominal closing time has passed, the actual closing time will be 5 minutes after the final bid was placed. It's a very good idea, helps the seller maximise their price (and thus the site's success fee) and prevents sniping. It's also a bit more realistic compared to an old-style "meatspace" auction. If you have a maximum price in mind you can just set an auto-bid and come back later. If someone outbids you the system will automatically raise your bid as far as necessary until it reaches the limit. Ebay never really got a foothold in this country, I'm not sure if they even bothered. The guy who started Trade Me sold it for NZ$700M a couple of years ago.
