This reminds me of an idle thought I had on my way to work this morning. I can't think of a good non-technical reason why the aperture should remain the same size during exposure. It should be possible in this computerised day and age to set the camera so that the aperture starts at say f/2.8 and stops at say f/11 during the exposure, not necessarily changing at a linear rate. Of course, the computer would have to calculate the exposure time accordingly, but it could have an interesting effect on the areas outside the critical plane of focus. Whether the investment required to develop it is worth it is a different matter, of course.
