Have you ever read Galapagos, by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.? If not, I recommend it for an insight into one possible evolutionary pathway for humans, and the occasional good joke. It takes place in the aftermath of a global financial crisis... It's not his best book, but even his poor ones are good and full of ideas.
