There was such a compatibility issue with certain SDHC cards,
Transcend IIRC but it was resolved by cardreader firmware updates. A
certain chip was faulty in that respect. The readers couldn't be
brought back to life though. Was it all different readers or all the
same make & model?

It was several different readers, different brands.

I didn't actually get involved since by the time I heard about it they'd already identified that the card was actually killing card readers, and since the only reader I had at the time was the internal one in my laptop I wasn't about to volunteer.

I was told the manufacturer recommended a vendor who were able to read the card and recover the photos, and once that was done the manufacturer requested the card be sent to them for "investigation".

They offered a replacement card, but didn't replace any of the damaged readers.
