IIRC, the way it works on my Sigma 400 is that you focus it somewhere between either min focus an 3m or 3m and infinity. Then you flip the "limit" switch. If the lens if currently focused out beyond 3m, then it won't search closer than 3m while the switch is set to "limit". If it's currently focused closer than 3m when you flip the switch, it won't go farther out than 3m when hunting for focus.
