So, are you going to pay for map updates for your new Garmin or
Magellan, or do you plan on just getting pissed off again when the
topic comes up? (Garmin updates are $69.99 each, or $119.99/lifetime.
 A Magellan map update I spot-checked costs $79.99.)

The TomTom pricing situation has actually improved considerably since
a year or two ago, so assuming you researched the map pricing policies
at the time you bought your TomTom, you should be pleased. It used to
be something like $50 for an updated map (released quarterly). Now
you can get map updates for $39.80/year. (New units with the "M"
suffix include lifetime map updates at a fairly small cost premium,
but these only came out recently. Conceivably buying a TomTom XL 350M
for $158.29 could be a good move, especially if you can sell or hand
down your existing unit.)

Our TomTom ONE XL-S does not have the slow acquisition problem you report.
