Well... most of the musicians I know perform classical music, because my wife and I are choral musicians. I've done a fair amount of "musical photography", but most of it was in my "film period", so I don't have many examples to post here.
Best received, I think, have been pix that show the performer "in the music"--only semi-aware of the surroundings; such as: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=3928151 (PZ-1p, FA 50/1.7, Kodak P3200. Makes most digital noise look trivial!) Also well-received are photos that show a beloved instrument in an unusual way, such as: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=11104831&size=lg (PZ-1p, Elite Chrome 100, F 17-24 fisheye, reflected flash) I haven't shot a jazz or rock performance since high school (40 years ago).
