the plane of focus is on the standing dog's muzzle, so the black dog is
slightly soft. 

I agree that the background is too busy for the shot to be really
successful. In the colour version and most attempts at b&w the terrier
blends into the brickwork too much. In this version of the b&w I used the
blue filter preset in Lightroom, and that brought about a reasonable amount
of separation.

The black dog's expression is quite clear on my screens. Your comment, and a
similar comment earlier about the monsoon cloud photo, hints to me that you
might have an issue with your monitor.
