Ann, It's a recent (5+ years?) trend. In many hotels, bars, etc., you'd find widescreen format TVs (16:9) that have the regular programs showing while (4:3) stretched to the full width.
That's how stupid hotels and bars compensate for lack of HD programming. I am convinced though, that it is a conspiracy: people get used to observe other people (including slim actors) rather fatty-looking. This way they don't worry much about their own obecity.
