A better late than never reply. As I sit here with a little bit of
time on my hands looking at my LXs with a 31 Limited and a 77 Limited on
them.....
I have enjoyed photography since I was a child. I recall having
some monstrosity of a camera and using b&w film. I have to ask my folks to
see if they remember. I progressed through Kodak Instamatic cameras from
the 126 cartridge into the 110. I never could afford much film, but I guess
the enjoyment of seeing the photos always made me feel good. Somewhere I
have some slides my father took of us. He enjoyed photography, but working
two, sometimes three, jobs he could not afford it. I guess I got the
photographic bug from him.
In 1984 work sent me to El Paso, Texas. A co-worker and I took a
trip to Sierra Blanca, New Mexico. An enjoyable day. I compared my 110
shots to the ones my friend took with his Olympus OM-1. There was no doubt,
I needed a 35mm SLR.
Being an engineer, I read up and compared. I had photography
magazined laying around. I really liked the annuals. I finally narrowed it
down to a Super Program, a Canon AE-1, and I cannot recall which Nikon.
That is when I went to the camera stores. With the advent of automatic
programmed cameras, I did not look seriously at others. This left out
Olympus...
Nikon and Canon felt nice, but once I held a Super Program there was
no turning back, (the LX was too expensive for a starter camera in my mind).
I enjoyed the size - I don't have large hands. So, it was a Super Program
and a 50/1.7. And I was off to the races taking pictures, making notes and
learning.
I felt I needed a backup camera and lusted at the specifications and
build of the LX. So one was soon in my bag. They are both still with me
and active. That Super Program is the only new camera I have ever bought
that did not need warranty repair.
Once in a system, it did not seem cost-effective to get another
system. Especially with the selection of lenses and their optical
qualities. I have never been one to study the characteristics of lenses,
but shots taken with these lenses just jump out at me. I also have a Nikon
F3 system that was given to me. There is one lens that stands out from the
rest, but it is not like my Pentax where rare is the lens I am not happy
with.
Once I picked up a screwmount camera for the collecting part of me.
Then I decided to take some shots with it. Three more bodies and about ten
lenses later and it just solidifies my happiness with Pentax. I get a kick
out of using my screwmount lenses on my k-mount cameras.
Why Pentax? It fit me at the time and still does. The optical
qualities are such that they have never detracted from my enjoyment of
photography. In a nutshell, it makes me happy!
