Battery meters run off a voltage reading for batteries not equipped
with electronics. Setting the voltage levels that correspond to
near-empty and empty is arbitrary and also depends on the draw of the
device. Since NiMH's and Lithium disposables have different maximum
voltages and discharge curves than the Alkaline AA's which most such
meter's are calibrated for there can be some extreme variation in
actual vs reported battery charge.
