I have a friend who had a Messerschmitt in the mid 60's. He loved
challenging Mustangs to races in reverse. Of course they'd cry foul when
they heard him shift gears.

As did the DAF. That one's a bit of a cheat, admittedly; it had a
continuously variable transmission (belt drive with conical pulleys),
so it either had one gear or an infinite number.

I've actually driven one of these. It can scare the daylights out
of you the first time you put it in reverse, and find that it could
go just as fast backwards as forwards. But the rest of the car isn't
set up for that, so the steering is almost impossible to manage at
anything faster than "typical" reversing speeds.

Interesting old machine and great to see it's being well looked after.
The idea of a car being manufacturer by a sewing machine company
reminded me of Australia's Lightburn Zeta, a car manufactured by a
washing machine company. Needless to say it wasn't a runaway success
(only about 300 were made) but I think it still has the distinction of
being the only car having the same number of gears in forward and
reverse (you had to switch off the engine to change).
