Hi Shel, The 56K is the "theoretical" maximum speed, but it is normal to get speeds in the 45K range in the real life. I have never managed to get a pure 56K connection. My absolute max. has always been around 49-50K. (And I have used dozens of modems on dozens of different phone-lines). The actual speed depends on the quality (and length) of the phone lines and I suspect 56K is only possible in a modem laboratory ;-) The modem may also alter the connection speed while you are connected, up or down... depending on the quality of the connection. It will not let you know about the change. To get reliable higher speeds, you need to take look at ISDN or xDSL.
