Were you using a photo backpack, or were they rattling around with your socks and underwear in a regular hiking backpack? I've never seen that problem with my MZ-S.
As for the shutter release, Pentax designed it to be very light, so you can 'sense the moment' (they get real lyrical in the brochure), but, as you mentioned, there's the separate AF button .
