Yes.  It is okay.  On the second try I got my laptop and external monitor to 
match perfectly (laptop + docking station = desktop work computer), and the 
laptop matches the home desktop nicely.

The primary problem is that one cannot adjust luminance, and iMacs are =bright= 
even when turned down as much as the OS allows.

Some early units had defective sensors, that gave monitors a magenta cast.  So, 
you would buy a used one at some risk.
