You could be thinking of Nantahala National Forest. There are numerous
national and state parks and forests, national historic sites, etc., in
that general area.

No, this was a brand new state park.

I remember driving north from Nantahala Outdoor Center on US 19/74 and seeing a sign pointing to the right just as I reached the northern edge of the gorge. I was coming back from Chattanooga on US 64 and didn't want to drive through Sapphire Valley, so I went north and "camped" at one of the rest areas in Nantahala.

You know, there's a section of US 64 between the Tennessee border and I-75 that I've driven a dozen times or more, and I've never seen it in the daylight. :-(

I think I must be confusing that trip with another waterfall trip where I came up US 276 out of South Carolina instead of US 19/74 from Murphy, because Dupont State Forest IS in the right relationship to US 276 and the link on Google Maps has the waterfall I remember finding there.

There's also Gorges State Park at the intersection of US 64 & NC 281, and right down at the SC state line on NC 281 is Whitewater falls the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi River.

You can get pretty good access to western NC waterfall country by following SC's Hwy 11 "Cherokee Foothills Scenic Hwy" and turning north at SC 130 which becomes NC 281 at the state line.

It's only about 8 miles north to US 64 from the state line, and in that area US 64 is the main waterfall route. Probably a little far east if they want to stay in the vicinity of Murphy though.
