My friend Chris is about to head off to North Carolina on vacation.
She'll be doing some photography and will be scouting some photo
locations for her husband Joe, who is a professional landscape
photographer. I asked if she'd be near Grandfather mountain and her
reply:

I was 17 mi east of Asheville on the last visit (which still
isn't quite east enough for Grandfather Mtn), and that is a 3 hr
drive east of where I will be.
>>>
I will be in Murphy, NC, which is in the westernmost county in NC,
abutting TN and GA.
>>>
>>> When Joe andI both take a Great Smokies vacation some year, we'd
probably do more of the length of the Blue Ridge Pkwy than I am
doing, which would put us near Grandfather Mtn
>
Does anybody have any suggestions for good photo locations for her to
check out in that area?

Murphy is just down the road (US 19/US 74) from Nantahala Gorge.

US 129 north takes you into Maryville, TN, where you can pick up US 321/TN 73 to Townsend, TN and the Gateway into Cades Cove in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.

Fontana Lake & a bunch more TVA projects are located nearby in GA, NC & TN.

Great Smokey Mountain Railroad runs from Bryson City to Andrews. You'd have to check the schedule for the longer runs, but I know there are daily runs up to Nantahala Outdoor Center from Dillsboro, NC.

And I could have sworn there was a state park right outside Nantahala Gorge that has several waterfalls, but I can't find it listed anywhere.
