If you click on the Apple in the upper-left and select "About this Mac" and
"more info" you get tons of information about specifically which Mac you have
which can help you determine (with Google's assistance) just how much your Mac
will take.

Mine, for example:

  Model Name: MacBook
  Model Identifier: MacBook3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz
  Number Of Processors: 1
  Total Number Of Cores: 2
  L2 Cache: 4 MB
  Memory: 4 GB
  Bus Speed: 800 MHz

Mine takes a max of 4 gigs. Some of the older Macbooks could only use 3 gigs
(ie, put 4 in but have your Mac ignore 1 of them). I think older ones might
have only accepted 2gigs to start with.

I know my daughter's Macbook Pro of a slightly-older vintage than my Macbook
wouldn't accept any DIMMs larger than 1gig. That was a bummer when we tried
upping it to 4 gigs and could not.
