it's rather simple in most Macs; many vendors supply step-by-step instructions, or you can look somewhere like macfixit.com

you can also get a price range and the type of memory you need at dealram.com (though its vendors are not the only choices)

memory is the first thing to try, but if your computer is 4 years old it is right on the PowerPC/Intel cusp; if the former, you are going to hit a wall with anything processor intensive, and with some of the early Intel models too, especially when using something like Aperture which likes to use the GPU a lot
