Infringers enrich Copyright-smart Photographers. Google & Flickr (along with the rest of the internet) make infringing simple. That's good for Copyright-smart Photographers. They also make catching infringers pretty simple, because most of them are clueless. While it may be counter-intuitive, Copyright-smart Photographers' feeling aren't hurt when people steal their work because they are going to nail a good percentage of them. A good enough percentage that they don't have to catch them all.
Yes, it is some very big company's policy to infringe/steal work. Mostly because photographers have the wrong-headed idea that they can't do anything about it, or they can't afford to do anything about it. Don't think that just because they are a "big guy" they can't be nailed. Gizmodo is in the process of learning that, as I type this. The settlement for their enfringement is more than likely going to be more than I make in a year. Too bad they didn't infringe MY copyrighted images. : ) I'm sure that Gizmodo will continue to steal, as long as the penalties they pay in a year are less than what they would need to pay to license real work. But that's up to the infringed-upon photographers to make happen sooner rather than later.
