If you fancy going all SUV, you could do worse than one of these:

What kind of range do they get on a charge & how long does it take to
recharge?
I've been toying with the idea of taking an old VW Microbus and
converting it to a home-built plug-in hybrid a la Mother Earth News.

Milk floats weren't much good as they were lead/acid batteries and slow
in both speed and recharge.
The company that used to make them lives (still) just down the road from
me and is still producing stuff, now with modern! technology. I am in
the process of fundraising for a lithium powered minibus for the charity
I run in the town. Our present, diesel-powered machine is nearing the
end of its useful life (sadly, only due to corrosion) and we only do
about 30-40 miles per day so battery power is perfect. The new cells
run at 400+degrees(C) and can cause the vehicle to easily keep up with
traffic and give a 120mile range. Overnight charge and off we go again.
Just have to find £40,000....
