it can probably teach you a lot very quickly. It's a very good idea to use
an incident light meter to understand some of the technical stuff. The
technical stuff is very simple but it can be quite intimidating until you
really start on it. If you want to spend money on a book you could do worse
than The Perfect Exposure by Jim Zuckerman. It's very pro incident metering
and contains some pretty pictures as examples.
