I don't think anybody is really surprised about the finding. I have no scientific education to speak of, but I remember when I first read The Blind Watchmaker by Dawkins how simple it all seemed, according to his wonderful explanation, and how unsurprising it is that some sort of replicators got started in the primordial soup.
