Larry, I am not sure what competition you were shooting, but it sounds a bit weird to me. What are you shooting that you need to have 40' to be in one shot? Team performances with 8 couples at once? I find that it is very rear that a "full-dance-floor" shots work composition-wise.
I am not even sure that the studio lights are good for this sort of venue. The on camera flash seems to be providing a reasonable light for this purpose. But even if you want to smooth out the effect of the on-camera flash and have a 2-4 studio lights working as radio-controlled slaves - better P-TTL-compatible, - you just need to make sure that those would not overpower the front one. So, you probably want to set them in that ratio to the main one such that they would produce no more than 1/3 - 1/2 of the main flash output at the central 20' of the floor.
