I am fully aware of that, Paul. I realize that SDM problem happens in statistically small number of samples. However such reasoning is for Pentax managers, not for individuals. Unlike you, I am not living in the country where consumer services are of very high level and Pentax service centers are numerous and shops carrying Pentax gear are aplenty.
Recently I have discovered some dust or specks or stains or whatever on my K-7's sensor. It shows starting from f/11 as soft spots and hardens progressively as aperture becomes narrower. Brought my camera to Pentax Israel for sensor clearing. No guitar. Suggested to them that I have some "stubborn" dust. They indicated clearly that they could take the camera in, put it apart, clean it and put it back again. But that wouldn't be a free lunch. Yes, my camera is under warranty, but this is how it goes here.
So, Paul, with all due respect, I am effectively forced to take the most cautious and most reliable course of action. Given that different people have different opinions, I see no reason not to voice my opinion (that of caution) every now and then.
It is tools we're talking about and the multi-parameter optimization game we're all playing. It is hard to tell whether I've found the global optimum, but I've surely found a local one. Hence are my comments.
