I don't count it as luck. I count the SDM paranoia as being partly the result of web overexposure and a general "sky is falling" mentality. I could be wrong about that, but I believe it's at least a contributing factor. I've also read that a number of SDM lenses that were sent to Pentax service had the manual/autofocus switch in the wrong position or halfway between the two positions.
