Boots are usual because in the past the field has been very muddy.
Even though there was good weather this year, most people come
prepared in case of rain.
Yes, this is indeed and "upper crust" affair. It is the principal
fund raising activity of the Somerset Medical Center, the hospital
serving my area. Tickets are only $60 per person, plus $40 for
off-site parking, but a spot to park along the track for tailgating
is much more expensive. On the Hill, and near the entrance, there are
corporate tents serving gourmet meals to hundreds of invited guests,
and those locations are even more expensive.
It is held at Hamilton farms, home of the Essex Fox Hounds
Association. This is where Jackie Kennedy Onassis rode to the hounds.
{Yes, they still have fox hunts in the Somerset Hills area.}
The races are a series of steeple chase horse races, some of the most
prestigious of its kind. Last year, the steeplechase event for The
Breeders Cup was a part of The Races, but that was not the case this
year.
