You're definitely better off with a dedicated film & slide scanner. Like Paul said, used Minoltas and Nikons are cheap these days, and one of the only features I think you *really* need is Digital ICE. That's the hardware/software combo that removes dust and scratches from scanned film. While it doesn't work on traditional B&W or Kodachrome films, for everything else it'll make your life a lot easier.
