Ken,

What is a quality copy unit for DSLR attachment?
I picked up a cheap one and wasted my money.

Would you consider direct DSLR use superior or inferior to a dedicated scanner.

Sincerely,

If you're talking about one of those attachments that goes on the end of a lens so you can photograph a slide ... something like this:

... a dedicated scanner such as the Nikon CoolscanIV will definitely give better results.

A flatbed scanner like the Epson V500 will give better results. That gadget sells for $89.95 and the V500 goes for around $125.00 - you'll get a lot more than $35.00 in extra value from the V500.

The only reason I have held off buying the V500 is it won't scan 4x5 transparencies. B&H has a Plustek flatbed for $99.95 (thru 12/31) that will handle up to 5x7 transparencies, but the resolution is lower than the V500 (3200 x 6400 vs. 6400 x 9600).

What I really want is the Epson V750-M Pro.

I don't know if the CoolscanIV gives as much more bang for the buck to justify itself over the V500, but I bought mine 7 years ago.

It appears Nikon has discontinued their film scanner line. Looks like they're still available as N.O.S. or used, but there's no new production.
